ePress was launched in late 2011 as a not-for-profit online publisher of peer-reviewed, quality-assured academic work by Unitec staff, students and associates. We publish academic work in a range of formats on the ePress website and provide a supportive publishing environment for current and emerging researchers. Our vision is to be a source of innovation within the open-access publishing world.

The ePress mission is to:

  • Foster research by providing a more direct link between the writers and readers of scholarly material
  • Support the emergence of Unitec scholars
  • Lead innovations in digital scholarly publishing
  • Provide an alternative means for the production and dissemination of scholarship
  • Reduce costs of, and barriers to, access to scholarly information
  • Promote electronic journals in under-served and emerging disciplines

EPRESS AND UNITEC

ePress is funded by Tūāpapa Rangahau (formerly the Research and Post-graduate Department) at Unitec Institute of Technology. Unitec funding supports an editor for the management and operation of our publishing activities, and contracts additional staff as required on a per-publication basis.

OUR PUBLICATIONS

eMedia

An eMedia publication is a digital publication that contains more than text as the main form of communication. The publication might include audio, video, animation or interactive functions. eMedia publications are single- and double-blind peer reviewed, depending on the needs of individual eMedia projects.

Books

Our books are long-form research-based works. All books published at ePress are double-blind peer reviewed.

Monographs

ePress periodically publishes monographs that offer a treatise on a single subject authored by current and full-time members of staff. All monographs are double-blind peer reviewed.

Thesis Reviews

Thesis reviews highlight emerging knowledge generated by postgraduate students from various Unitec programmes and are authored by current and full-time members of Unitec staff. The reviews are edited by ePress and are a contribution to the research environment by the review authors.

Journals

ePress currently has three journals in production:

Whanake: The Pacific Journal of Community Development. Established in 2015 by Unitec Social Practice Pathway (formerly the Social Practice department), Whanake is a bi-annual publication edited by John Stansfield and Gavin Rennie. Perspectives in Biosecurity is a multi-disciplinary electronic journal of research papers covering all aspects of the field of biosecurity including, but not restricted to, invasion biology and ecology, invasive species identification/diagnostics, management and eradication/control, new invasive species records, modelling, biosecurity law and policy, relationships between human society and invasive species. Developed from the paper series of the same name published by ePress since 2015 and published annually, it is edited by Dan Blanchon and Mel Galbraith. See here for submission guidelines.

Pūrātoke Journal of Undergraduate Research in the Creative Arts and Industries is an online, peer-reviewed journal, dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research within the creative arts and industries. It is edited by Scott Wilson and Samuel Holloway. See here for submission guidelines.

Conference Proceedings

From time to time ePress publishes conference proceedings. We manage the process from copy editing onwards, with the ability to assist with design and layout. All articles within proceedings are double-blind peer reviewed.

Forum Proceedings

An innovative area of publishing for ePress, a forum is curated into a proceedings document which includes an introduction contextualising key themes emerging from discussions, text from the keynote speech, summaries of each presentation, and a curated counterpoint chapter. Both the introductory and counterpoint chapters are double-blind peer reviewed.

ePress Series: Research Reports

ePress periodically publishes research report papers that highlight findings of completed research projects by current members of staff and their research associates. All papers are double-blind peer reviewed.

ePress Series: Discussion and Occasional Papers

ePress publishes occasional and discussion papers that discuss current and ongoing research, authored by members of staff and their research associates. All papers are double-blind peer reviewed.

ePress Series: Specialised

Any specialised series published by ePress is championed by an editor/s from within a specific discipline, with ePress providing support and processes as required. If you are interested in editing a specialised series from within your discipline, please contact ePress.

Perspectives in Biosecurity was an occasional, multi-disciplinary series of research papers and other outputs covering all aspects of the field of biosecurity, including invasion biology and ecology, invasive species identification/diagnostics, management and eradication/control, new invasive species records, modeling, biosecurity law and policy, relationships between human society and invasive species. Papers in the Perspectives in Biosecurity series were primarily the results of research carried out by staff, students, graduates, associates, and collaborators of Unitec, and all papers were subject to a double or single blind peer review process. This series has now been developed into the ePress journal Perspectives in Biosecurity, edited by Dr. Dan Blanchon, Head of Environmental and Animal Sciences Pathway (dblanchon@unitec.ac.nz) and Mel Galbraith, Environmental and Animal Sciences Pathway (mgalbraith@unitec.ac.nz).

ePress Series: innovateITP Research Reports

innovateITP Research Reports (formerly Metro Reports) present research conducted through the Unitec Research Voucher Scheme, which facilitates access by industry and community clients to Unitec research expertise. This research is conducted to client brief, similar to research consultancy. Voucher Scheme projects are published and disseminated according to a recommended, but flexible and adaptable format. In this format there is less emphasis on systematic, comprehensive research justification, elaboration and presentation of findings, but rather an emphasis on research process, narrative and outcomes. Voucher Scheme project reports are intended to be accessible to clients and other research users in ways traditional academic research may not be. All papers are double-blind peer reviewed.
