Deane-Rose Ngatai
JOB: Assistant Manager, Kura Gallery
QUALIFICATION: Bachelor of Design and Visual Arts (Photography and Media Arts)
"Coming straight out of secondary school I decided to follow my passion for photography and art, and Unitec's BDVA programme allowed me to go directly into the photography major. I was supported throughout my studies by the Whai Ake Maori Mentoring Programme and I am lucky to be part of it again now as a mentor. Having the Te Noho Kotahitanga marae on campus was extremely special to me. Not only is it a masterpiece and a source of inspiration, it also gives you a connection to the whenua (land).
I am currently in my second year of the Master of Design by project (Awatoru) and working in the field of contemporary Maori art and design at Kura. Being surrounded by art and inspiration every day is amazing and I love meeting people and having korero (discussions) about Maori art. I've also been able to exhibit my work at the gallery, including a show that's coming up for Matariki. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to contribute to the kaupapa and movement of contemporary Maori art."
