Tikanga - Marae Protocols

TE REO MĀORI

Ngā tikanga whakahaere mō te marae me te wharenui:

  • He wāhi ‘AUAHI KORE’ tēnei. Nā reira, uiuia nga kaimahi o te marae nei mō ngā wāhi kaipaipa o Te Whare Wānanga nei
  • He marae ‘WAIPIRO KORE’ ‘TARUKINO KORE’ hoki tēnei marae
  • Kāre e whakaaengia te kai waipiro, tarukino hoki i ngā kaupapa ka whakahaerengia ki tēnei marae.
  • Kāre e whakaaengia kia haria he kai, he inu, he pia ngaungau hoki ki rō whare (heoi, ka taea te kai rongoa)
  • Me pātai atu ki ngā kaitiaki o te marae i mua i ō mahi tango whakaahua ki rō whare
  • Me tangohia ngā hū i mua i tō tomokanga i te whare
  • Kaua e whakairi taputapu ki runga i nga whakairo
  • Kaua e werohia ngā pakitara, ngā whakairo, ngā mahi raranga ki tētahi mea. Kaua hoki e tūkino i te āhua o ngā taonga o rō whare.
  •  Kāre e tika ana kia noho ki runga pera, kia tū rānei ki runga moenga
  • Kaua e tū ki runga, e whakawhiti rānei i tētahi tangata e takoto ana
  • Ki te tū tētahi ki te kōrero; he hapa nui te whakawhiti, te hīkoi rānei i mua i a rātau. He pai kē atu te hīkoi mā muri, te tatari rānei kia mutu tana kōrero
  • Me kōrero MĀORI anake te tangata ki te ‘Powhiri’
  • Ka tae ate kōrero Pākeha, reo kē ake rānei ki rō ‘Whakatau’

TE REO A TAUIWI (ENGLISH)

Please follow the guidelines below when you are inside the wharenui:

  • The marae is a smoke free area. If you want to smoke, please ask marae staff for designated smoking areas nearby.
  • The marae is alcohol free and drug free.
  • The consumption of alcohol and the use of any illegal drugs/substances is strictly prohibited during any kaupapa facilitated on the marae.
  • Food, drinks or chewing gum are not permitted inside the wharenui at any time (medicines are acceptable).
  • Do not take photos of the interior of the marae. For group photos permission may be granted at the discretion of the Taurahere Marae Manager.
  • Please remove your shoes before you enter the wharenui.
  • Do not hang anything on the carvings.
  • Do not insert anything into the walls, carvings or woven areas, or in any way alter or deface any of the interior space.
  • It is not appropriate to sit on pillows or stand on mattresses.
  • Please do not step over any people who are lying down.
  • If somebody is standing and talking, you should not walk across their line of vision. If you really need to then walk behind them, otherwise it is best to wait until they have finished talking.
  • During the powhiri process, Maori is the only language to be spoken.
  • When a ‘Whakatau’ is in process you will be able to speak English or any preferred language.
