Unitec Chief Executive, Gus Gilmore says the October transition will help streamline core aspects of the process before the Christmas closedown and the beginning of new semesters in 2023.

“All teaching and learning activities will continue without disruption to our kaimahi (staff) and ākonga (learners). Pastoral and learning support services and programmes will continue and the exceptional learning experiences we provide and manaakitanga of our ākonga will not be disrupted.”  

Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka Pou Hautu, Keith Ikin says strengthening relationships critical to the success of ākonga is an essential part of the transition process.

“Our relationships with Iwi, Māori communities, employers and industry are integral to delivering vocational education that empowers our ākonga and meets the needs of our rohe. Our ākonga are at the heart of everything we do.”

A formal ceremony honouring the whakapapa, the history and great leaders of the past who were central to the success of Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka will be held alongside mana whenua as part of the transition process.

Gus Gilmore says Te Pūkenga will combine the strength of existing Institutes of Technology, Polytechnics (ITPs) and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) into a united network.

“We’re confident the capability to support work-based, campus-based, and online learning as a unified system will build strength over time. Our ākonga will have access to a comprehensive network of studying and career opportunities.”
