Safety advice

Here are some simple tips to help keep yourself safe when you're on campus or out and about.

Personal Safety

  • Recognise potentially dangerous situations before they develop.
  • Assess the risks and have a safety plan. Think about what you would do if you felt threatened.
  • Carry a personal alarm, or be prepared to scream or shout loudly if attacked.
  • Respect your intuition. Do not let rationality override your ‘sixth sense’ – this sense could save you from danger.
  • Consider taking a self-defense course.
  • When socialising, consider the effect of alcohol. A clear head makes for easier decisions about personal safety.
  • If assaulted on campus, report the incident to the Security Centre.

Property

  • Never leave your wallet, bag, purse or other items of property unsecured or unattended.
  • Only carry cash for your immediate needs.
  • Clearly mark your property.
  • Never carry your personal identification number (PIN) with your credit cards and never tell anyone what your PIN number.
  • Make sure people behind you cannot see your PIN when you are at the EFTPOS terminal or automatic teller machine (ATM).
  • Carry your bag, or purse close to you. Do not put them on the floor when in a toilet cubicle.
  • Do not leave keys, cash or other valuables in desk drawers or filing cabinets.
  • Lock your car and office when you leave them.
  • Report all theft to the Security Centre using their initial incident report form.
  • The lost and found property office is located at the Security Centre in Building 112, Mt Albert campus and managed by the Security Team.

In your vehicle

  • Park in an illuminated, busy area and make sure your surroundings are safe before getting out of your car.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car.
  • Always lock your car securely, close the windows and lock the boot.
  • Walk confidently to and from your car, with your keys held ready to open the door.
  • Check the back seat or hatch for intruders before getting into the car.
  • Once inside, lock all doors and keep the windows closed, if feasible.
  • If a passing motorist indicates that you should stop, keep driving to a service station. If you decide to stop, stay in the car with the doors locked and the window partly open to speak through. Note the vehicle registration and drive away if you feel threatened.

Out walking

  • Avoid lonely places, especially at night. Walk only on lit walkways away from shrubs and trees and do not take short cuts.
  • Be alert and walk purposefully – confidence deters attackers. Walk with a friend, or stay with a group.
  • Be wary of strangers, on foot, or in cars, who ask directions. If in doubt, move away and note vehicle type and registration number.
  • If someone is following you, change direction and go to an area where there are other people.
  • If you feel unsafe anywhere at any time, contact the Security Team and request an escort.

Fire

  • Operate the nearest fire alarm.
  • Immediately contact the emergency services on 111 and provide details of the location and extent of the fire.
  • Contact the Security Team and provide details of the location and extent of the fire.
  • Leave the area and gather in the designated assembly area.
  • DO NOT USE THE LIFTS.
  • Do not block road ways, as emergency services may need to use them.
  • Do not re-enter the building until told to do so by fire service personnel, building fire wardens, or a Security officer.
