International Study Grant

Unitec will be offering international study grants of up to $2,000 (NZD) to our international learners in the academic year 2025. Find out if you are eligible for any of the 2025 International Study Grants.

Engineering Study Grants

International learners from any country who meet the eligibility criteria will be eligible for this study grant of up to $2,000 (NZD) for the first year of full-time study. 

English Language Study Grants

International learners from any country who meet the eligibility criteria will be eligible for this full-time study grant of up to $1,500 (NZD).  

Country-Specific International Study Grants

International learners from specified countries who meet the eligibility criteria will be eligible for up to a $2,000 (NZD) study grant for the first year of full-time study, as specified in the tables below. 

Terms and Condition

The following terms and conditions apply to the international learner grants offered by Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Unitec-Te Pūkenga), outlined in the grant tables. By submitting an application to study, the international learner (ākonga nō tāwāhi) agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

The International Learner (ākonga nō tāwāhi) Study Grant

1. The grants available in 2025 to international learners (ākonga nō tāwāhi) are as follows:
   • Engineering Study Grants: Up to $2,000 (NZD) for the first year of full-time study for eligible Engineering programmes, outlined in the grant table above.
   • English Language Study Grants: Up to $1,500 (NZD) for the first year of full-time study for eligible English Language programmes, outlined in the grant table above.
   • Country-Specific International Study Grants: Up to $2,000 (NZD) for the first year of full-time study for eligible programmes from the specified countries, outlined in the grant tables.
2. The purpose of these grants is to support ākonga nō tāwāhi commencing full-time study at Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Unitec-Te Pūkenga) in semester 1 or 2 of 2025 intakes.
3. Te Pūkenga shall award one grant per successful applicant per programme, the value of which is applied based on the payment of fees for the qualification.
4. For the removal of doubt:
   • for multi-year programmes, the grant is applied to the fees paid for the first year of study for the first 120 credits.
5. Where an ākonga nō tāwāhi fails a course/s and needs to repeat the course/s, no form of study grant, pro-rated or otherwise, will be applied to the additional course/s. Fees will be levied at the full tuition fee applicable for the course/s at the time of enrolment.
6. Where an ākonga nō tāwāhi is required to put their study on hold after completing one semester or more, the grant continues to be valid for the further study paid for unless a refund or permanent withdrawal is actioned.

Eligibility

Applicants for the grant must:

1. be an ākonga nō tāwāhi (as defined by section 10(1) of the Education and Training Act 2020);
2. be a new ākonga nō tāwāhi to the programme of study at Unitec (i.e., not re-enrolling at Unitec) applying for full-time study in semesters 1 and 2 2025;
3. be subject to the fees (Tables 1-6) set by Unitec - Te Pūkenga for new ākonga nō tāwāhi commencing study in semesters 1 or 2, 2025;
4. have applied and met the entry requirements for the chosen programme of study (as set out in the programme regulations);
5. be accepted into the programme on a full-time basis (and continue to be enrolled as a full-time ākonga nō tāwāhi throughout the 2025 academic year (please note, eligibility will be excluded if reduced to part-time study) and;
6. be commencing study in semester 1 or 2 2025. Ākonga no tawhai will forfeit their grant if they defer their start date to after semester 2, 2025
7. meet country-specific eligibility criteria for Country-Specific Grants, as detailed in the programme-specific grant table above.

Ākonga nō tāwāhi are not eligible and cannot receive the grant if:

1. they are recipients of another grant, scholarship, award, or other concessions from Te Pūkenga or external bodies;
2. they are applying for Recognition of Prior Learning or Cross Crediting to reduce the number of credits that are needed for the given qualification;
3. have permanently moved to study part-time (including commencing full-time study and then reducing this to part-time). In such a situation, the ākonga nō tāwāhi waives their right to the grant and will be liable for the payment of remaining fees for the semesters enrolled as part-time. Any withdrawal will be subject to individual Te Pūkenga business divisions’ admission, enrolment, fees, and refund policies and procedures;
4. they are studying on a pathway offer where the qualification listed above starts in 2026 or later.

Next steps after application submission

1. Te Pūkenga business divisions will send a letter of offer to the successful applicant:
   • advising of the offer of a place;
   • applying the grant to the ākonga nō tāwāhi fees;
   • setting out the remaining fees to be paid and future study grant applications (if any); and
   • the grant must be taken in semesters 1 and 2, 2025. No deferrals will be accepted.
2. Grants are not transferable between business divisions and campuses of business divisions. Where a transfer occurs, for example, from a campus outside Auckland to a campus in Auckland, an additional fee must be levied to account for the differential in the grant eligible for the location (in Auckland/out of Auckland).
3. The grant is not transferrable or exchangeable and cannot be taken as cash.

The following terms and conditions relating to a grant offered by Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Te Pūkenga). By submitting an application to study, the International Learner (ākonga nō tāwāhi) agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

The International Learner (ākonga nō tāwāhi) Study Grant

1. The grant is known as the International Learner (ākonga nō tāwāhi) Study Grant (“the grant”).
2. The purpose of the grant is to support ākonga nō tāwāhi commencing full-time study at Te Pūkenga in semester 1 and 2 2024 intakes.
3. Te Pūkenga shall award one grant per successful applicant, the value of which is applied based on the payment of fees for the qualification.

   • for multi-year programmes below the postgraduate level, the grant is applied to the fees paid for the first year of study.
   • Where a postgraduate programme is paid for in installments, and 120 credits are paid for a programme of study on an offer of a place for a programme in excess of 120 credits, then the study grant for the first 120 credits shall be reduced by the amount stipulated in Table 1 for the 120-credit study grant. When the balance of the fees is paid for the further 60 or 120 credits to complete the qualification, then the balance of the study grant shall be reduced from the final installment payment so all installments paid total the net price stipulated for the qualification listed in Table 1.
5. Where an ākonga nō tāwāhi fails a course/s and needs to repeat the course/s, no form of study grant, pro-rated or otherwise, will be applied to the additional course/s. Fees will be levied at the full tuition fee applicable for the course/s at the time of enrolment.
